What is a button battery sealing machine? What are its functions and effects?

1. What is a coin cell crimping machine? What are its functions and impacts?

First, what it is. A crimping machine (coin cell crimping machine) is equipment dedicated to assembling coin cells. A coin cell consists of five layers — positive case, electrode stack, separator, gasket, and negative case — and the crimping machine uses a pair of dies to press these five layers together as snugly as pinching dumpling wrappers. How well it is pressed directly determines whether the cell leaks and whether the data is trustworthy.

It serves three purposes. First, it seals the cell tightly: when sealed well, the electrolyte doesn't leak and the open-circuit voltage stays stable, so the cell can complete the entire charge–discharge cycling test. Second, it ensures batch-to-batch consistency: a good electric crimping machine keeps the pressure error within ±0.5% and runs unchanged for 72 hours in a 35–40℃ dry room — cells crimped in the morning and those crimped in the afternoon have exactly the same sealing quality, so the data is comparable. Third, one machine, many uses: swapping a set of dies takes only 2 minutes, and CR2016, CR2025, CR2032 and CR2430 can all be crimped without re-adjusting the pressure.

How big is its impact? Here's an example: a research group needs to assemble 100–200 CR2032 cells a day. With an electric crimping machine, each cell takes only 8–10 seconds, so more than 300 cells can be assembled per day with a pass rate above 99%. Conversely, if the crimping pressure is set incorrectly, at best the cells leak and the voltage runs low — a full week of hard-won cycling data is wasted; at worst, cells bulge during high-temperature testing, creating a safety hazard. That's why people in the industry often say: whatever effort you skimp on during crimping will be paid back doubly in your data.

2. Manual, pneumatic, or electric crimping machine — what exactly is the difference?

Aspect

Manual

Pneumatic

Electric

Pressure stability

Depends on operator feel; error up to ±10%

Depends on air supply stability, about ±5%

Servo-motor auto-control, error as low as ±0.5%

Time per cell

15–20 s

10–15 s

8–10 s

Requirements

Nothing to hook up

Needs a stable air supply (0.5–0.8 MPa)

Just plug it in

Data logging

No

No

Pressure curve of every single cell can be saved

Cost

Cheapest

Moderate

More expensive

In short: if you need reliable, repeatable data, go electric; if you're on a tight budget and use it only occasionally, go manual; if your plant already has a compressed-air supply and output is moderate, pneumatic offers the best value.

3.FAQ

Q1: Why do crimped cells leak electrolyte or show low voltage?

Nine times out of ten it's one of these three causes: the pressure isn't set correctly (usually between 400–1200 kg depending on the case specifications), the gasket has aged, or worn die edges cause uneven crimping. Check the pressure setting first, then the dies — most leakage problems can be solved this way.

Q2: How many cell types can one machine crimp?

Just change the dies — mainstream models cover everything from CR1220 to CR2450. Before buying, ask clearly: are the dies standard parts? Standard parts are cheap and easy to source; custom parts are expensive and slow.

Q3: What pressure should I set exactly?

Take the most common CR2032 as an example: the industry typically uses 500–800 kg. But don't just copy someone else's parameters — take your own cases and gaskets, crimp and tear them down repeatedly, and find the optimal value for your own production line.

Q4: Can it be used inside a glovebox?

Yes, but confirm three things first: whether the equipment contains any materials banned in gloveboxes (such as easily vaporized grease), whether the body size fits through the antechamber, and whether the motor noise is acceptable.
