Application Of Copper Foil In Lithium Battery
Apr 26,2022

As a new generation of green high-energy rechargeable batteries, lithium-ion batteries have the characteristics of high voltage, high energy density, good cycle performance, small self-discharge, and no memory effect.
The main way to improve the specific energy of lithium-ion batteries is to use higher-capacity positive and anode battery materials, thinner separator paper, thinner copper foil and aluminum foil, and reduce other auxiliary additives as much as possible.Lithium-ion batteries are mainly composed of positive electrodes, negative electrodes, separators and electrolytes.

copper foil

The potential applied to the two poles of the battery during charging forces the lithium intercalation compound of the positive electrode to release lithium ions, which are embedded in the graphite negative electrode of the hexagonal sheet structure after passing through the separator;

During discharge, lithium ions are precipitated from the graphite in the lamellar structure and recombine with the lithium intercalation compound of the positive electrode, and the movement of lithium ions generates current.

The main material of lithium-ion battery current collector is metal foil (such as copper foil, aluminum foil), its function is to collect the current generated by the battery active material to form a larger current output, so the current collector should be fully in contact with the active material,And the internal resistance should be as small as possible, which is also the main reason why lithium-ion batteries use higher-priced copper foil and aluminum foil.

Aluminum Foil

Copper foil has good electrical conductivity, flexibility and moderate potential, resistance to winding and rolling, and relatively mature production technology, so it has become the preferred material for lithium-ion battery negative electrode current collectors.

Copper foil is not only the carrier of negative electrode active materials, but also the collector and conductor of negative electrode electrons in lithium-ion batteries.

Therefore, it has special technical requirements, that is, it must have good electrical conductivity, the surface can be uniformly coated with negative electrode material without falling off, and it has good corrosion resistance, and needs to have good hydrophily.
