5 companies competition on Million Miles battery

Overall, long life, high battery life, and low cost have become the main development direction of power batteries. All battery companies are running fast on the new technology track.

In 2019, Tesla announced that it had developed a new type of battery that would allow its battery life in electric vehicles to exceed 1 million miles (1.61 million kilometers), more than double its current battery life.

In May 2020, Tesla announced that it had improved its new "Million Mile Battery", which further reduced cobalt and increased the energy density of the battery, while reducing costs.

On June 23, Musk said that Tesla will hold the "Battery Day" on September 15. Industry speculation may be announced at that time about the "millions of miles" battery news.

However, before waiting for Tesla to disclose more detailed information, the CATL took the lead in commercializing the "Million Mile" battery.

On June 8, Zeng Yuqun, chairman of CATL, announced that the company is preparing to produce batteries with a life span of 16 years and a mileage of 1.24 million miles (about 2 million kilometers).

It is understood that the core of the CATL self-repairing long-life battery technology is to slow down the capacity decay rate, that is, to control the rate of active lithium consumption. The battery capacity decline is related to the cathode electrode, anode electrode, and battery electrolyte.

There are already companies such as Tesla, CATL, General Motors, SVOLT and BYD in the "Million Mile" battery track. It is expected that more battery companies and OEMs will join the camp in the later period.
